Ridge and Hip Capping

With both concrete and clay tiles roofs over time the ridge and hip capping mortar  bedding breaks away. This is a result of weathering and movement in the roof structure which has taken place over an extended period of time. As the rigid mortar is normally not able to take any movement, it gradually breaks up leaving the capping loose and a potential source of leaking during rainfall.

This maintenance item is often missed but can lead to more severe problems if not picked up early enough. These gaps in the roof structure can be a source of pest entering the roof space as well as water during rainfall - which can cause further damage.

It is a relatively simply item to remedy. This normally involves breaking away and cleaning the surfaces of the tiles so that they can be re-mortared. It is possible to utilise a flexible mortar compound which will provide better protection in the future and allow for some movement in th roof structure.

Often this issue occurs in older clay and concrete tile roofs, but may also occur on newer homes when there has been larger movement and setting in of the roof structure.
